Bacteria Testing - Cold water storage tanks

Bacteria test kits for Cold Water Storage Tanks

The majority of buildings have cold water storage tanks. Some of these tanks feed only toilet cisterns or calorifiers, other feed the whole property.

So long as the cold water storage tanks meet the requirements of Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 then it is permissible to supply Drinking Water from cold water storage tanks.

In many office blocks the tanks often supply toilet areas which include wash hand basins, although Staff would not generally drink the water, they would certainly brush their teeth with it.

If your property has cold water storage tanks it is important to know which outlets are fed by them. If they feed drinking water or wash hand basins, it would be prudent to check the water quality every 3 or 6 months to ensure that there is no danger to users.

Older tanks often suffer poor water quality due to a build-up of sediment or rust. If the tanks have missing or ill fitting lids, then debris, insects, birds or rodents can gain access.

Analysis of Water Quality in Cold Water Storage Tanks

Our 'Potable' test checks that the water in your cold water storage tank is fit to drink by analysing it for:-

  • Total Viable Count @ 22°C
  • Total Viable Count @ 37°C
  • E.Coli
  • Coliforms

The pack we send out to you will contain a sterile bottle and full instructions on how to take the sample.

It's important to ensure that your hand are sterile at the point of sampling the tank so we include hand sanitiser and gloves as part of the test kit.

Once the sample is taken it needs to be analysed as soon as possible. For this reason AquaCert organise the courier collection, we also supply temperature controlled boxes to ensure the sample arrives in good condition.

Our testing is done in compliance with UK and EU guidelines including:-

  • The Microbiology of Drinking Water (2002)
  • Water Supply (Water Quality) (Scotland) Regulations 2001
  • Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000
  • The Microbiology of Drinking Water (2002)
  • Interpreting the Results

There are national and EU 'guide levels' for drinking water quality. If the results exceed these levels, it doesn't mean the water is necessarily unsafe to drink; AquaCert will advise you on the Certificate of Results.
