Danger Areas

For a few hours, once or twice every two weeks, the stadiums cater for thousands of people. At all other times, the numbers will be minimal. The hot and cold water systems need to large enough to cope with the huge demand, then maintenance procedures need to be robust enough to ensure the water quality does not deteriorate during the intervening period.

The top grounds also have irrigation systems for the pitch and under-soil heating to keep the surface ‘playable’ during frosty periods. During the winter months the under-soil heating will operate but there may be no requirement to irrigate the grass. This gives rise to stagnant water pipes, gently warmed by the under-soil heating, an ideal environment for Legionella growth. The first time the irrigation sprinklers are utilised can allow an enormous aerosol of Legionella contaminated water to be released, a particular risk to the groundsmen.

Treating the irrigation system is imperative, then regular testing for legionella to ensure there is no hazard to the staff or players.
