Learn MoreWater on trains is used for toilets/washing and catering. Water is taken onboard at ‘Carriage Filling Points’ which may be located at depots belonging to the train operator, its maintenance company or other third party.
The typical train carriage water filling points are considered to be fluid category '5' risks because they are exposed to general environmental contamination and faecal matter from carriage toilet discharges. The hoses attached to stand-pipes used for filling trains are often exposed to faecal matter, fuel oil and surface water and must be cleaned and disinfected prior to each use.
Initially the responsibility for the water quality lies with the ‘owner’ of the ‘Carriage Filling Point’, then passes to the train operator once the tanks have been replenished.
It is good practice to disinfect/flush each water system every 6-8 weeks and also if the train has not been in service for greater than 3 days.
